X-Men: First Class

I know, I know, it's been a while since my last entry and it's kinda pathetic that the only thing I write about is fandom stuff, but I really have to say a few things about this movie. xD

So, yeah, I finally went to see the new X-Men movie last Friday with tharayn.
I always liked the X-Men movies, although the last two (the third one and the one about Wolverine) were a bit of a let-down. But I was really hopeful when I saw the trailer for X-Men: First Class, which, like the other movies before, I just had to see. :D
And the movie was quite entertaining. ♥
Not only were the main characters all very sympathetic, there was also. So. Damn. Much. Going on between Charles and Erik, that tharayn and me couldn't stop commenting on their behaviour towards each other during the whole movie. – Really, it was very distracting, and I swear to god I haven't seen a film this slashy since Sherlock Holmes.
So if there's deep down in your heart a place for "special" relationships like these, then please, please watch this movie if you haven't already seen it. It's just one of those films that will make your inner slash fangirl very, very happy. xD

It was also nice to finally learn more about Charles' and Erik's past, even though there was a huge gap between their childhood years and the time of their first meeting. I would have loved to see Charles and Raven grow up together, and I missed seeing more of what was done to Erik when he was a kid. But instead the film concentrated on their time together as young adults – which was also fine by me, though. ;)
I liked how Erik's way from being a deeply hurt, but determined young boy seeking for revenge to becoming the charismatic leader of a group of "outlaw" mutants and Charles' greatest enemy was depicted. And it really broke my heart, when the two men – who had up to this point always treated each other like brothers – ultimately turned against each other to fight for their own (opposite) believes.

Another thing I liked, and which was also the reason I loved the first two X-Men movies so much, was the whole racism issue. Because in the end the films are not only about mutants, but about how society defines what "normal" is and how it treats those who don't fit the idea of how the world should look like. In a way, it's not that difficult to relate to Erik who – feeling rejected and betrayed by society – fights mutants and humans alike, because no matter how hard you try, if you're this different you'll never be truly accepted.

I absolutely loved James McAvoy by the way.
His Charles was such an arrogant and self-righteous little prick who knew everything better than everyone, that I really wanted to punch him in the face sometimes. But he was also so charming and cheerful and caring especially when it came to Erik *coughs* that it was impossible to not like him. Even in the moment he got shot and realized, that he'd never be able to walk again, he still cared more about his friends than about himself.

It's a bit sad, actually, that this movie will be the only X-Men prequel – or at least the only prequel about the time Charles and Erik were best friends. I'd love to see more of their relationship during that time, but I guess I'll have to read fanfiction for that.
- So please go and write me some! ;)

[*Attention! Spoilery stuff ahead!*]

P.S.:
In the scene where the younger mutants told Charles and Erik that "Darwin is dead", tharayn and me couldn't stop laughing. I'm not sure if this scene was supposed to be funny (I guess it wasn't), but we just couldn't help it. xD

Okay, this is from ariastar: (Yes, I totally stole it. Will tell her though :D): "we invented the drink version of the Pieta on the Beach. It is made like so:

Pieta on the Beach
White rum (to represent Cuba)
Muddled strawberries (to represent Charles -- littledust says it is to represent his blood, but mostly it is because he has an adorable blush)
Champagne float (to represent, according to J, the happy times gone by, drifting away in a sea of bubbles)
Simple syrup (to represent ... something in this drink besides alcohol)
Edible ball bearing (to represent THE BULLET)
Ground-up edible ball bearings (to rim the glass)

Drink until you can't feel your legs."

Have fun :D
